This guide is designed to provide a starting point for undergraduate and graduate students researching topics dealing with literature, literary history, literary criticism, from all times and places.  The resources listed are both in print and web-based; some of the resources are owned by or rented by the CSULB Library and others are are freely available on the Internet.

MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.

This style manual is most useful for undergraduates, particularly those who must use the 'MLA' style of referencing in their papers. 

Gibaldi, Joseph.  MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing

This style manual is most useful for graduate students and professors, not only for information on the proper use of the 'MLA' style of referencing, but also for formating their papers and theses for presentation or publication.

 

 

Harner, James L. Literary Research Guide: An Annotated Listing of Reference Sources in English Literary Studies. 5th edn. 

THE source for descriptions of hundreds of reference sources in general, English, and American literary studies. 

Gohdes, Clarence. Bibliographical Guide to the Study of the Literature of the U.S.A.

A guide to assist you in determining useful recources for the study of American literature.  Use it to supplement Harner (below).

 Patterson, Margaret C. Literary Research Guide.

A somewhat out-of-date resource, but handy for older resources.
