All internship positions for the 2023-2024 academic year have been filled.
Application materials for FALL 2024 will be accepted beginning April 1, 2024.
The University Library encourages expressions of interest for 1-2 paid positions for 10-15 hours per week during each Spring and Fall CSULB semester, as funding permits (please note that CSULB semester dates do not always correspond exactly to a quarter calendar).
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an ALA accredited graduate program in library/information science.
In addition, applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for participating in internships established by their institution, and must conform to their institution's guidelines and practices for internships, and must have completed at least one third of the course requirements leading to the Masters degree.
It is a condition of employment that the library school be an active participant with CSULB Library in monitoring progress of the student and working with CSULB librarians to provide mentoring. While the library strives to accommodate student's schedules, the majority of the experience is during regular business hours.
The paid library internship at California State University, Long Beach is designed, and is intended, to provide the successful candidate(s) with a professional experience in librarianship, an experience that will allow the intern(s) to both evaluate academic librarianship as a possible career and prepare the intern(s) for professional opportunities.
Librarian interns will be scheduled to work alongside Library Faculty at the library’s research assistance desk and will participate in the library's web-based 24/7 reference service.
Librarian interns will receive orientation to the library's collection development processes and will collaborate with CSULB Library Faculty in materials selection.
Librarian interns also will have the opportunity to observe one or more bibliographic lectures, then to "team teach" a future session(s) and, subsequently, develop and lead course integrated instructional sessions of their own.
The objective is to provide each intern with real life experience in a variety of professional activities and functions in a busy and progressive academic library.
