EBSCO databases will have a new interface.
My videos that demonstrate EBSCO databases, such as Academic Search Complete and MLA International Bibliography, will need to be updated. The basic systems, however, are the same. Watch this short video from EBSCO about the changes. I will update my videos sometime in late Fall 2025.

Below are links to my Steps to Research Videos & Assessment, which match the lessons in my Steps to Research Handout. These videos have questions attached to them to assess your understanding. When you are finished with an assessment, you can email yourself or your professor a Certificate of Completion to show that you have completed the review.
- You can repeat the tutorials until you get 100% and then email the Certificate.
- Certificates of Completion for Dr. P.'s Tutorials are not badges. The Certificates only serve to prove to your professor/instructor that you have completed the tutorials.
Take your time and watch the videos closely to answer the questions.
Videos + Quizzes
- 1) Signing into the Library & Finding Research Guides Review how to sign into the CSULB University Library and find research guides made by our librarians who specialize in different fields of study.
- 2) Accessing eMaterials Review how to access eMaterials like PDFs, eBooks and streaming media from the CSULB Library.
- 3) Basic Database Search Review how to access CSULB databases and search one of our most popular ones, Academic Search Complete. The tutorial includes using search terms, limiters and how to download a PDF.
- 4) Searching More Databases Review working with multiple databases. Specifically, we will look at searching multiple databases at one time in EBSCO and ProQuest. We will also look at MLA International Bibliography and JSTOR.
- 5) OneSearch Review how to use OneSearch to explore ideas. The video also includes information about BeachReach Interlibrary Loan and using OneSearch's pins to keep records of useful finds.
- 6) Google Scholar Review tips about using Google Scholar (scholar.google.com).
- 7) Evaluation Review tips for evaluating our search results to see if they are what we need for an assignment. Review how to look up journals and their publishers using one of our CSULB databases, Ulrichs Web, as well as looking up authors in Google.
- 8) Word Doc & MLA Citations Review how to use MS Word to set up an MLA Style document for your assignment. MS Word can be accessed through MS Office 365 (Microsoft Office 365).
- 9) Avoiding Plagiarism A tutorial that describes what plagiarism is and offers tips for avoiding it in your writing.
- 10) Advanced Searching - MLA Int'l Bib + JSTOR + ILL This tutorial provides an overview of how to effectively search for scholarly materials in MLA International Bibliography and JSTOR for literature studies. It covers key search techniques, including refining results using subject terms, applying search limiters, and accessing full-text articles or book chapters. The video also explains how to request materials through interlibrary loan (ILL) when full-text access is unavailable.
- 11) Advanced Searching - MLA International Bibliography + ILL This tutorial takes a close look at the literature studies database MLA International Bibliography. This database often requires Interlibrary Loan to access its materials, so please budget your time to request items.
