Search Strategies

Select & Use Keywords

Choose Specific Keywords: Use precise terms related to your topic such as: Stem cell therapy, regenerative medicine

Combine Keywords: Use Boolean operators to refine searches, such as: (Stem cell therapy AND regenerative medicine)

Expand with Synonyms: Broaden your search by including related terms: Stem cell therapy AND (regenerative medicine OR tissue engineering)

For more guidance, watch the video Selecting & Using Keywords to refine your search strategy.

Enhance Your Search with PubMed's MeSH

When Should You Use MeSH?

If your keywords do not appear in the titles or abstracts of your search results, try using PubMed’s MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) to find more effective search terms.

  1. Test your keywords in PubMed or another database.
  2. Review your search results:
    • Are your keywords appearing in the titles of relevant articles?
    • Are they frequently found in abstracts?
  3. If your keywords are not commonly used, search MeSH to identify standardized terms that may improve your search results.
