What is Chicano/Latino Studies?
Chicano/Latino Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study that highlights the experiences of people of Latin American descent in the United States. Chicano Studies focuses specifically on the experiences of people of Mexican American descent while Latino Studies focuses on people with heritage from other Latin American countries.
Why the 'e'?
Since "Chicano" and "Latino" have gendered endings that change depending on the subject at hand, many people have started to use gender-neutral endings by either adding an "e" or "x" at the end of these words. By referring to a group composed of people of mixed gender identities as Latine/x or Chicane/x the speaker is making a decision to include and address people of all gender expressions, going beyond the gender binary to include all the ways folks express and experience gender.
Interdisciplinarity
Chicane/Latine Studies is an interdisciplinary field, meaning it draws from a variety of fields. This can make researching more challenging as you may need to consult a variety of databases and sources to find the information you are seeking. Don't get discouraged if you can't find any sources! You may just need to use a different database or combination of search terms. Make a consultation appointment with me if you are running into problems!
