Note on Search Terms

Scholars and databases have used and will continue to use a variety of words to describe people of Mexican/Latin American descent. This is important to keep in mind when researching!

You may find it helpful to use a combination of these words when conducting searches by using the word "OR" between each adjective. For example, some scholars may refer to women of Mexican American descent as Chicanas, Xicanas, Latinas, Hispanic, Mexican American, and more. To include all these in your search you could search:
  • Latinas OR Chicanas OR Xicanas OR "Mexican American" OR Hispanic

It may also be helpful to use an asterisk at the end of adjectives with multiple gendered endings to include all possible gender variations in your search results.
  • To search for Latina/as, Latino/os, Latine/es, or Latinx you could instead search for Latin*
