The 6 Steps for Starting Your Research:

  1. Define your topic – What is it that you want to write about? What information do you know?
  2. Develop a search strategy – Pick out the main keywords/concepts that define your topic by using Boolean searching:

AND – learning styles AND African-American [narrows a search]

OR – learning styles  or cognitive styles [broadens a search]

TRUNCATION * [broadens a search]

Learn* retrieves learner, learners, learning

PHRASE SEARCHING – looks for words in a specific order i.e., “African-American”

  1. Find and review books  - Search for books + encyclopedias  in OneSearch
  2. Find and review scholarly articles – Search for articles in a research database such as ERIC, Academic Search Complete
  3. Evaluate what you find 
  4. Cite your sources – Use the Citing/Writing tab in the research guide
