  • Description: The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) serves as the investigative arm of Congress and is known as the "congressional watchdog." GAO's role is critical in overseeing the spending of taxpayer dollars, examining the efficiency and effectiveness of government operations. The agency produces a wide range of reports and testimonies that assess how federal funds are used, identify potential savings, and recommend ways to improve government accountability and performance.
