Databases by Information Type

  • Step 1: Enter an industry's name in the search box.
  • Step 2: The sections "About" and "Industry at a Glance" contain overview-type information.
  • Step 1: Enter an industry's name into a search box. Alternately, you can enter a NAICS code and change 'Select a Field (optional)' to 'IC NAICS Code or Description'.
  • Step 2: Scroll down to 'Search Options'. In the 'Document Type' area, select 'Industry Overview'.
  • Step 3: Press Search.
  • Note - You can use the publication date slider on the left-hand side of the search results page to limit your results to documents published within whatever time period you specify, which should help you find recent documents that discuss trends/projections/forecasts for your industry.
  • Step 1: Select the icon of three horizontal lines toward the top left-hand side of the page.
  • Step 2: Select 'Browse' from the resulting sub-menu.
  • Step 3: Under 'Industry and Market Research' section at the top of the page, select 'Business Monitor International (BMI) Industry Reports' and/or 'First Research'.
  • Step 4: Browse Business Monitor International's Industry Reports by industry or topic as well as by country; you can browse First Research's Industry Reports by industry.
  • Note - Your search results will be sorted alphabetically by title by default. You might want to re-sort them so that the most recent results are listed first.
  • Step 1: Select the 'Industry Analysis' tab toward the top of the database's home page.
  • Step 2: Select 'Reports' on the resulting page and then select 'Mergent Reports'.
  • Step 3: Select the industry for which you would like an industry analysis report. Reports are available for the largest global industries.

Note: When viewing a chart in Statista, be sure to check the Source link for more information about the data set.  The source link will often provide you with insight on additional associations or publications that are focused on your research interest, providing an efficient way to identify next steps for your research.

  • Step 1: Look up an industry report in the search box and select a report.
  • Step 2: Use the left side navigation menu to select 'Key Statistics'.
  • Step 3: Select 'Industry financial ratios'.

Databases for Company Data & Analysis

Follow these steps to find company profiles in ABI/INFORM:

  • Step 1: Enter the name of a company in the first search box.
  • Step 2: Below the search fields, under 'Document Type', select 'Company Profile' then press the search button.
  • Step 3: Press the search button to generate a list of search results. The reports in your search results may have the same title but will be from different years.

Follow these steps to find company profiles in ABI/INFORM:

  • Step 1: Enter the name of a company in the first search box.
  • Step 2: Below the search fields, under 'Document Type', select 'Company Report' then press the search button.
  • Step 3: Press the search button to generate a list of search results. The reports in your search results may have the same title but will be from different years.

To find a company information in Statista, enter the name of a company in the search box and select a resource from the search results.

To find company information in IBISWorld, enter the name of a company in the search box and select the benchmarking report in the dropdown list that appears.

To find company information in Mergent Online, enter a company name in the 'Company Search' box and select a company from the dropdown list that appears.

Follow these steps to build a company list in ReferenceUSA:

  • Step 1: For company lists, use the “U.S. Businesses” database and select ‘Advanced Search’ to access more specific search criteria.
  • Step 2: You can filter companies by various parameters such as location (state, city, zip code), business type (SIC/NAICS code), company size (number of employees, sales volume), and more.
  • Step 3: After applying your search filters, press the 'Search' button. The system will process your request and display a list of companies that meet your criteria. You can review brief details in the search result view or select a company to get more detailed information.

Databases for Porter's 5 Forces

The Porter's Five Forces model is a standard business tool used to analyze industries. The five forces are threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, threat of substitute products or services, and rivalry among existing competitors.
