Search Strategy

Search Strategy

  • Identify all possible key words, synonyms, MeSH Terms
  • Decide where to search / which databases (see the Find Articles tab)
    • Test your keywords by using them in the recommended databases
    • Do your keywords that you're searching appear in the titles of your results?
    • If your keywords are not included in the titles, search MeSH to determine what keyword(s) to use
    • Identify author supplied keywords in the relevant articles you find 

Literature Search

  • Review titles and abstracts of your most relevant results
  • Identify materials that make the most significant contributions to the understanding of the topic 
    • use cited linking tools and cited reference searches (see Find Articles tab to learn more)

Mapping the Literature

Map the Literature

  • Organize the materials you will use in your literature review (according to a designated critera) into a 'Table of Evidence Document' (example below)  
    • Population characteristics
    • Research Methodology, study design, etc.
  • Use Mendeley or Zotero
    • Organize the literature into folders using an online reference manager
    • Map the literature according to your designated criteria by creating folders, and sub-folders.

Table of Evidence

Helps to identify key pieces of information to use in writing your literature review and to organize the information. Review the literature on your topic and identify the following for each article:

Mapping the Literature

Purpose, Author, Date The purpose of the research study, the author, and pulication date
Design and Key Variables

Methodology used

Key Varialbles:

  • Independent (controlled or manipulated)
  • Dependent (responding)
Sample and Setting Sampling - Inclusion or exclusion criteria for selecting groups or individuals to the research study, describes the population being investigated, as well as the setting, or location of the research site.
Measures What were the specific instruments, scales, questionnaires, or methods used to collect data from participants or to observe outcomes? Examples: Dietary Assessment Tools, Biochemical or Anthropometric Measurements, Physical Activity Monitors, Surveys, or Behavioral Interventions.
Results or Findings Finding from the study and interpretation of the findings
Conclusions, Limitations, Applicability to the Project Characteristics of research design or methodology that impact or influence the application, or interpretation of the results

 

Analysis and Interpretation

Analysis and Interpretation

  • Discuss the findings and conclusions of pertinent literature
  • Discuss the progression of the research on the topic 
  • Discuss the relationships in the literature (methods, procedures, analysis, conclusions, etc...)
  • Develop your own ideas related to it
